How to Make Applesauce // Come fare l'applesauce

I don't know why since I'm not a baking person, but I've been feeling the need to bake lately which ended up in me looking for delicious and healthy recipes on Pinterest. And I've found a lot. The problem is that most of them called for an ingredient I didn't have in my pantry, applesauce. As you maybe know, I live in Italy and applesauce isn't something we use and I doubt you can even found it in stores.

So what did I do? I googled it to learn something more about it, and guess what? It's incredibly simple and quick to make at home. All you need are apples... and a little cinnamon if you want that extra sweetness.

I've no idea how store-bought applesauce tastes, but this one is an absolute delight. It's delicious on its own (I sometimes eat spoonfuls of it), to add some sweetness to your morning oatmeal and it's amazing in baking. And it's healthy as well because there are no added sugars.

INGREDIENTS
  • 4 apples (Golden Delicious, Fuji and Gala are my favourites)
  • 120 ml (1/2 cup) water
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon powder

INSTRUCTIONS
  • Peel the apples, if not organic, core them, then chop them.
  • Add apples, cinnamon and water in a medium saucepan, cover and bring to a boil.
  • Reduce heat to low and simmer for15-20 minutes, or until the apples are soft. Make sure there's always a little bit of water on the bottom. Add more, if needed.
  • Mash the mixture with a fork or a potato masher. Or use a blender, immersion blender or food processor if you want a smoother consistency.
  • Let cool to room temperature, then store in the refrigerator for up to one week.

Buona serata.
